One of Canada's most storied naval architecture firms, Robert Allan Ltd., and Canada's leading arctic and offshore engineering firm, Ausenco Sandwell, have announced they have formed a joint venture — Canada's Arctic SAGE Team — to bid for the design of the Canadian Coast Guard's new flagship icebreaker.

Established in Vancouver in 1930, Robert Allan Ltd. is Canada's most senior naval architectural firm, and one with a rich history. Today, Robert Allan Ltd. is an employee-owned, world-renowned and award-winning consulting naval architecture firm that produces a wide range of ship designs for a diverse international clientele. The firm's expertise in Arctic ship design spans almost 40 years, and includes many recent icebreaking vessels now operating in the Caspian Sea and Sakhalin, Russia.
Current major design projects include three Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels (OFSV) for the Canadian Coast Guard, a 90 m. Ice-Class Oceanographic Research Vessel for the Australian Government, high-performance emergency response fireboats for leading ports in the United States and China, and many escort and terminal support tugboats for projects around the world.

Ausenco Sandwell was established In Vancouver, BC as Sandwell Engineering in 1949. Today, the company combines internationally respected project management services with industry-leading specialised arctic and offshore engineering capabilities.
In the late 80s, the Canadian Icebreaker Design Group (CIDG), led by Sandwell, designed and prepared a cost estimate for construction of the POLAR 8 icebreaker. Sandwell managed the overall design effort, and was responsible for design of all structural and electrical engineering and a significant portion of the mechanical systems design. Subsequently, Sandwell and Versatile Pacific Shipyards formed a joint venture for the planned construction of the ship.
Recent arctic and offshore projects have included offshore platforms in ice regions and an innovative Tanker Loading Unit (TLU) four km offshore of Sakhalin Island in Pacific Russia. These complement a continuous stream of ice engineering projects in Canada's North since the early 1980's.
